Jurgen Klopp dropped a bombshell on Monday as he revealed Joel Matip will miss the season with injury. The Liverpool boss tried to offer an explanation.
Joel Matip will miss the rest of the season through injury, says Jurgen Klopp. That makes all three of Liverpool’s senior centre-backs out long-term.
“Unfortunately, we found out now after everybody looked at it that Joel will be out for the rest of the season,” said Klopp, per Liverpoolfc.com.
“But he will be ready for the start of the next pre-season and finally everything will be sorted.”
It’s an ankle ligament injury that has done the damage. Klopp believes it’s likely that Matip simply pushes himself too hard in an attempt to cover the already-damaging injury crisis.

“In the end, we have to admit that he probably did that [pushed himself too hard],” said Klopp.
Both Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are out long-term, of course – potentially for the season themselves. That’s particularly significant.
Liverpool went into this season with just three senior centre-backs, after all. Van Dijk, Gomez and Matip are all gone, however.
What RTK has to say
Well, this explains it.
Liverpool went from not wanting to sign anyone this month to bringing in two centre-backs in one day. Both Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak are now Liverpool players.
And, quite plainly, they’re there to replace Matip. Liverpool have effectively gone for two bites at that cherry, hoping one of the signings will pay off.
Best case, both do. That’s the best case scenario here and it’s a particularly strong one.
But yes, if anyone was wondering why Liverpool’s change of heart was quite so dramatic, you have your answer. The Reds had no other choice.
It sets up a very interesting second-half of the season as Liverpool try to win multiple honours with a completely new centre-back combination.
