Liverpool can make a big January transfer happen late in the window. We only need to look back one year to see that.

It appears Liverpool are going to try and sign a defender in the next few days. Yes, they’re left it late but even more injuries have forced their hand.

That’s what The Times reports. They say that while the Reds wanted to avoid business this month, they feel they have little choice now.

That’s because both Fabinho and Joel Matip picked up knocks this week. Jurgen Klopp is now without his first, second, third and fourth-choice centre-halves – an impossible position, really.

So Liverpool will try to make something happen in the next few days before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

But have they left it too late? If we look back a year, maybe not.

Leaving it late

We recently wrote that the 2020 January transfer window provided hope that Liverpool could sign a player. And it appears that wish has come true.

The question now, then, is whether they can make the right signing happen. Liverpool are effectively trying to sign a first-team defender, here. That’s not easy for a club their size.

They may need to spend a bit of cash to make it happen.

“I am not sure there is an £80 million centre back available at the moment and a club thinks, ‘We can get £80 million for him so we will sell him.’ I don’t think that’s the case,” said Klopp, per The Times. “Actually, pretty much I know. This calibre of player the teams would not sell them now.”

He’s absolutely right. Well, for a defender actually worth £80m, anyway.

Liverpool can’t sign a sure-thing like Virgil van Dijk, then. A young player to take a chance on feels like a better bet.

That will still cost a chunk of money but certainly not close to £80m. And last January is encouraging in that regard.

There were seven transfers that cost over £15m that month. All seven came in the final four days of the transfer window.

It is very possible to do a big January transfer late on, then. Whether Liverpool have the finances themselves is another question – we don’t know what they’re willing to spend.

But if they do have some available, there will be a player or two out there. Last year is evidence of that.
