The 2020 January transfer window tells Liverpool fans not to give up hope. The Reds look desperate for a new signing but the signs aren’t good.

Liverpool slumped to yet more dropped points on Thursday. They lost 1-0 at home to Burnley – their first Anfield defeat in the league for four years.

It was a terrible display but not a shocking one. It’s now five games without a win, four games without a goal. Liverpool look awful.

There are good reasons for it, too. Injuries robbed them of any consistency this season and leave them particularly short at the back.

Fabinho is playing centre-half as a result of injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez. Joel Matip can’t stay fit, either – though, he did feature against Burnley.

Liverpool could really use a signing, then. A defender would strengthen their back line and allow Fabinho to move back into midfield. The entire team would feel stronger.

But it appears no signing is incoming. That’s according to several sources, including Neil Jones at Goal.

Yet, there is a slither of hope for Liverpool fans and it comes from last year.

Yeah, that’s right – we found a positive sign from 2020. Albeit, a very slim one.

It comes from how that window shaped up. If we look here at the top Premier League transfers from that month, we see that seven cost over £15m.

All seven came in the final four days of the window. Christian Eriksen joined Inter on the 28th, with Giovani Lo Celso permanently joining Tottenham Hotspur on the same day.

Spurs agreed a fee for Steven Bergwijn on the 28th, too.

Bruno Fernandes joined Manchester United on the 30th. The same day, Sheffield United signed Sander Berge. It was also the day Wolves brought in Daniel Podence.

Lastly, on the 31st, West Ham United signed Jarrod Bowen.

So we know that the big deals can, as last year, wait until the final days. There is still a bit of hope, then.

Perhaps something kicks off a chain of events that brings about a player’s availability. Perhaps someone lowers their price, or Liverpool simply have a change of heart.

Regardless of the reasoning, it’s possible. Liverpool have plenty of time to do some major business – if they want to.
