Liverpool could find a bargain in Declan Rice if they manage to replace Jordan Henderson. The Reds’ captain won’t be around for ever.
90min reports that Liverpool are one team interested in Declan Rice. Several are, however, given his price could drop to £50m.
That’s a pretty fantastic price for a young, yet experienced, England international.
It’s one that could make real sense for Liverpool, too. Rice could be the long-term successor to Jordan Henderson.
Henderson turns 31 at the end of the season. We expect him to play at the top level for years to come but given his injury history, he’ll have to step back in the next couple of seasons.
Replacing him will be very though, though. Henderson is an incredibly reliable player who leads the team. You don’t find them easily.
But Rice fits the bill. He’s only 22 but is coming up on four full seasons of Premier League experience. Even better, he’s an experienced leader as West Ham’s vice-captain.
This would all look great anyway even before you get to him being a defensive midfielder. Rice would naturally replace Henderson even in the XI.
The only non-ideal part of this is the timing. It would be nice if the opportunity came about in one or two years, right when we expect Henderson to step back.
But that’s nit-picking. As it is, Liverpool are unlikely to find such a natural replacement for their captain. Rice could play for a decade, just like Henderson, and replace so many of his qualities – just as he’s set to do for England.
Liverpool were never going to fully replace Steven Gerrard. In Henderson, though, they found a player who matched similar qualities from the same area of the pitch.
As Liverpool prepare to move on from Henderson, Rice feels like the ideal opportunity. It would make £50m feel like a bargain if they pull it off.
