Chelsea are ready to break their transfer record to sign Erling Haaland, according to reports. Liverpool know what they’re up against, then.

This comes from the Athletic. They claim that Chelsea are desperate to land Erling Haaland and would break their transfer record to sign him.

This would come in the summer, of course – one year after they previously broke their transfer record to sign Kai Havertz.

And one year after they spent £50m on Timo Werner, another player from Germany who was supposed to end their goalscoring woes.

Liverpool, who reportedly also want Haaland, now know what they’re up against in race that could cost over £100m, per Eurosport.

What RTK has to say

There are two things to read into Chelsea’s interest. Firstly, that this will be a very costly signing for anyone.

But it also says a lot about Haaland’s reputation right now. Teams are clearly willing to rip up their previous plans to get him.

There is absolutely no way, after all, that Chelsea signed Werner and Havertz with the idea that ‘this only works if we also sign Haaland’.

Those two were supposed to be the stars. But just six months into that plan, the Blues appear ready to move in a different direction.

That’s the draw with Haaland, really. He does look like a one-man attack – a plug-and-play signing who should just work in any attack you have.

It’s an ability that’s worth an awful lot of money and it means you don’t have too much risk with his signing. His game is so versatile that it should just fit alongside what’s already there.

That’s one of the reasons we have Haaland down as a potential superstar at Liverpool.

But if the Reds really want him, they’re going to have to be willing to put it all on the line. This one promises to be a very tough fight.
