Erling Haaland destroyed Hertha BSC on Saturday. He showed why he’s the star Liverpool must set their sights on going forward.
We’re playing some fantasy football here, to be honest, but Erling Haaland was electric against Hertha BSC.
He was so good that we can’t help but feel he’s the ultimate Liverpool signing. The next generation is on its way and Haaland should be at the top of the Anfield list.
And we mean at the very, very top – standing alone, above players like Jadon Sancho and Kylian Mbappe.
These are the players Liverpool will look at as they look to solidify themselves at the top of football. They’re on top right now, of course, but the squad is ageing.

They need to make sure the next group is just as good and the best way to do that is by having the right star. And that star is Haaland.
Haaland beats Hertha
Haaland scored four goals in 32 minutes against Hetha. Borussia Dortmund were actually trailing but the Norwegian got an equaliser right after half-time and then had his team 5-2 up by the 80th minute.
So you can read that and say ‘well of course you want him at Liverpool’. But it’s more than that – the types of goal he scored were just wonderfully ‘Liverpool’.
Haaland’s first was simple enough. He got into the middle of the box for a low cross from the right and tapped it home. Those crosses happens roughly 90 times a game at Liverpool, so he’s certainly a fit there.
His second was a fantastically-timed run in behind, catching Hertha too high, collecting a pass and smashing it home. All happening in an instant. That kind of quick, direct movement works at every top team, of course.
The third and fourth goals were just a dream from a Liverpool perspective, though.
Haaland’s hat-trick came from a poor pass at the back. The 20-year-old pounced to get there before the defender, rounded the goalkeeper and slotted it away.
Well, we say ‘pounced’ – he made up about ten yards on the defender. It was fantastic pressing, wonderfully quick-thinking and incredible speed. Exactly what Liverpool want from their forwards, in other words.
The fourth was similar. Play got congested in midfield, resulting in a loose ball. Haaland did pounce this time, getting on it in a flash and holding off a defender.
From there, he played a pass inside and just continued his run in behind. He collects a pass, steadies himself, and fires home. A perfect high counter-attack.
TuttoMercatoWeb recently said Liverpool were to rival Juventus for Haaland. He has a £67m release clause in 2022 and the Reds like him.
If that is at all true, then Liverpool need to plan for that release clause. Get him sooner if you can but otherwise, that’s the goal.
Player’s like Mbappe and Sancho are incredible and we’d be thrilled to have them at Liverpool. But Haaland is just such a perfect fit. He’s a one-man attack and it’s an attack that suits Liverpool.
He could come in, slot into the side in an instant and stick around for a long time. It all just seems too ideal to pass up – he’s the right player, at the right age, at the right time.
