Liverpool have made contact over Dayot Upamecano, according to one journalist. The Reds aren’t alone in their pursuit of the player, however.
This comes from BILD’s Christian Falk. He took to Twitter to say that Chelsea had made contact over Dayot Upamecano, something Liverpool and Bayern Munich have already done.
By ‘contact’, he means the player’s management – they’re the key players here.
That’s because, per the Guardian, Upamecano has a £39m release clause for the summer. There is no negotiation needed with RB Leipzig, then – pay the fee and you can have the player.
As long as you convince him to choose your club, of course. Clearly, there will be a fight for Upamecano this summer.

That Guardian report also makes it clear that Leipzig will not sell the Frenchman in the January window. Upamecano is staying until the end of the campaign, when he will almost certainly leave.
It seems the race to his signature is well and truly underway, then.
What RTK has to say
In our opinion, Upamecano is far and away the best-value defender around right now. £39m for a young player with his ability and experience is just remarkable in the current market.
So, no – this won’t be easy for anyone. Upamecano will likely have his pick of clubs from Europe’s elite as we can’t imagine that Chelsea and Bayern will be Liverpool’s only competitors here.
Just about everyone at the top of the game may get involved, depending on their need for defenders.
But even then, teams may get involved whether they need him or not. That’s the real worry.
That Guardian report claims Manchester United want him, for instance, and they’ve spent well over £100m on their options. Upamecano is just that good a get.
Hopefully, Liverpool have enough in their locker to get this one done. If they’re already in talks over it, it suggests they feel they do.
It would have been perfect to get him in this month, of course. But as that isn’t possible, we’ll happily settle for a summer move.
