Liverpool like the look of Nikola Maksimovic. That’s apparently according to Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis, per Jim White.
Jim White disclosed this information on TalkSport. The crux of it all was less about Nikola Maksimovic and more about Kalidou Koulibaly, however.
White says he talked with De Laurentiis about Koulibaly. To put it briefly – Napoli would want around £100m in order to sell him.
But the real story here is Maksimovie.
“[De Laurentiis] then says to me ‘I thought you were going to refer to our defender Nikola Maksimovic – the Serbian who is 29 years of age – and Liverpool’s previous interest in him’”, said White.
“So I said ‘are Liverpool still interested in your defender?’ He interrupted me to say of course with injury problems to [Joe] Gomez and [Virgil] Van Dijk but no, they haven’t heard from them of late.”
What RTK has to say
Not the strong source in the world, no. It’s Jim White claiming he’s had a chat with a club owner in Italy.
Still, we wouldn’t be surprised if this was true. We actually suggested Maksimovic as a solid Liverpool target last month, after all.
As far as we’re aware, Maksimovic hasn’t signed a new contract and can leave Napoli for nothing in the summer (per TuttoSport).
That hands Liverpool two options – get a pre-contract arrangement or try to get him in early on the cheap.
If Liverpool did want a reasonably-priced senior option to get them through this season, Maksimovic ticks several boxes. The problem, then, is that there’s no real long-term scope.
Maksimovic turns 30 this year and that likely isn’t the kind of player Liverpool want to full out their ranks with. They’ll surely look for someone far younger.
Still, as a quick fix, Maksimovic is surely an option. But if De Laurentiis hasn’t heard from the Reds at all recently, it’s probably not an option they want to take.
