Liverpool should consider rivalling Internazionale for Napoli defender Nikola Maksimovic. The defender’s contract is expiring.
Nikola Maksimovic runs out of contract in the summer and that should perhaps interest Liverpool.
It reportedly interests Internazionale, according to Tuttosport, who plan on offering him a deal soon. But perhaps Liverpool can jump ahead.
It’s little secret that the Reds are short at the back. They went into the season with only three senior defenders and now Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk are out long-term.
That leaves only Joel Matip – and he hasn’t been reliably fit for a year.
Maksimovic could be a decent deal, then. With his contract expiring, he’d make for easy January negotiations as Liverpool can offer Napoli money for a player they’ll otherwise lose for nothing.
The Reds could massively appeal to the 28-year-old, too. They could give him first-team football at an elite club for a good few months. A chance he’ll likely never get elsewhere.
But at the same time, he’d come without the reputation and expectation of other players. Maksimovic could drop back into a squad role without too much fuss – something you couldn’t do with Kalidou Koulibaly, for instance.
And the Serbian does tick a few boxes at the back. He’s tall at 6ft3, meaning he can handle himself in the air.
Maksimovic also excels at passing the ball and maintaining possession. He typically averages around 92% pass completion – over 95% this campaign.
That’s a key skill for Liverpool, given how much of the ball their defenders end up with.
And at 28, Maksimovic is experienced enough to play from the get-go. Hopefully, he could slot in seamlessly.
Liverpool might have their eyes elsewhere but for a quick-fix, Maksimovic is an option worth considering.
