Liverpool are always planning for the future, they’re also always keen on rewarding players who have performed well. In lieu of planning for the future with new signings, the Reds are set to make a less costly move. According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are going to offer Fabinho and Virgil van Dijk new contracts.
Fabinho and Van Dijk defensive rocks
Liverpool weren’t always so defensively sound.
OK, forget about this season. This season doesn’t count, for obvious reasons which we’ll get into later.
Last year the Reds were impassable at times and their defensive record was a cornerstone of their charge to the Premier League title.
The spine of the defence was funded by the sale of Philippe Coutinho.
Since then the pair have, along with Alisson Becker, gone on to make the Reds, on their day, one of the strongest defences in world football.
Fabinho and Van Dijk new contracts
This season has proved a unique challenge.
The Reds have lost Virgil van Dijk for the rest of the season due to a horror tackle from Jordan Pickford in the Merseyside Derby.
Thanks to injuries to Joel Matip and Joe Gomez, Fabinho has stepped into the back line.
According to Fabrizio Romano, speaking to Give Me Sport, Liverpool are looking to give Fabinho and Virgil van Dijk new contracts.
The Reds are looking to reward Fabby for his dedication and versatility whilst also avoiding any vultures towards the end of Virgil’s contract.
What RTK has to say
This is excellent news.
The Reds can’t afford to lose the spine of their defensive unit.
Keeping Fabinho and Van Dijk at the club is essential for the next few years at the club.
The Dutchman may not feature again this term but he is utterly indispensable and Fabby has proven that he can and will give everything for the side, they more than deserve new deals.
