Liverpool are always on the lookout for the next best thing. We signed Harvey Elliott with one eye on the future, the same goes with Billy Koumetio and Sepp van den Berg. We could be looking to repeat the trick. According to O Jogo, Liverpool hold a serious interest in Nuno Mendes.
Liverpool boy wonders
The Reds have a team for tomorrow currently progressing through the academy.
Billy Koumetio was signed from Orleans and was impressive throughout pre-season, earning himself a Champions League appearance this term.
Harvey Elliott was signed from Fulham and is now tearing it up in the Championship, on loan at Blackburn Rovers.
We always want young talents to be brought in so that the club can mould them in their image, forging them to be ready to slot in when the time comes.
Liverpool serious interest in Nuno Mendes
Reports in Portugal have once again linked the Reds with one of the country’s hottest prospects.
O Jogo has claimed Liverpool placed a bid for Nuno Mendes over the summer.
However the €22m (£20m) offer was rejected with Sporting holding out for double that figure.
The 18-year-old left back is reportedly set to sign a new deal with the Portuguese side which will see his release clause raised to €70m (£63m).
The outlet believes that the Reds interest in the defender is serious, suggesting that he could be converted into a central defender in future.
What RTK has to say
Liverpool signing Nuno Mendes would be putting a lot of faith into the youngster.
£20m would be a sensible fee but we can see why the Reds didn’t meet the asking price.
At his age anything over £20m is a huge risk, we could be better served letting him develop further before approaching in the future.
We don’t desperately need him at the moment anyway, we’ve got cover at left back in Kostas Tsimikas.
