Some Liverpool fans are struggling to wrap their heads around Jurgen Klopp’s decision to start stars against Midtjylland. The boss went with a strong lineup.
Jurgen Klopp opted for a surprisingly strong lineup against FC Midtjylland on Wednesday. Liverpool started the game with Mohamed Salah, Fabinho, and Trent Alexander-Arnold in the XI.
While you can easily make a case for Alexander-Arnold starting – he needs match-fitness, after all – it’s less clear with the other two.
Both started against Wolves at the weekend and Liverpool never needed a result against Midtjylland. The win over Ajax sent them through as group winners, making this one a dead-rubber.
And fans couldn’t quite wrap their head around the decision to start some stars.

What RTK has to say
Well, we didn’t see it coming. Our predicted lineup didn’t feature any first-team regular – just a mix of youth and squad players.
But Klopp sprung a surprise on everyone by naming the likes of Fabinho and Salah in the team.
Given his outspoken views on player fitness, we find it impossible to believe that he’s taking any real risks here, however. Instead, this will all surely make sense before the end of the month.
Then there’s the obvious – Klopp and co. know far more about player fitness and who’s capable of what than we do. If the club feels Salah and Fabinho will be fine – or even benefit from playing – then that’s good enough for us.
Players can pick up serious injuries in training, just as they can do so in games. Thus playing this 90 minutes shouldn’t really be a risk, especially as the game never really had a need to be high-intensity.
So, as always, we’ll put our trust in Klopp and the club on this one. They do tend to get it right.
