Liverpool proving they can beat biggest problem for 3rd straight season

Liverpool appear on course to beat their biggest problem for the third straight season. The Reds delivered a major trophy the last two times.

Liverpool beat Wolves 4-0 on Sunday to keep up the pace at the top of the Premier League. The Reds are level on points with Tottenham Hotspur, who come to Anfield this month.

And that’s all quite incredible, honestly. The Reds are dealing with an injury crisis that leaves them without several first XI players.

They’re having to do it in the wrong season, too. This is a compacted season that forces games closer together – far harder to deal with when you have a smaller squad.

But then, this isn’t the first season Liverpool have faced their biggest problem.

Change of plans

Liverpool have severe defensive issues this season – something that has happened in both previous seasons.

In 18/19, Joe Gomez started the season as first-choice alongside Virgil van Dijk. But he was out injured before the end of the year and would be for some time.

Joel Matip ascended to first-choice in style, however. He stayed there for the rest of the season and helped deliver the Champions League trophy.

Thus Matip stayed there to begin the 19/20 season. He was fantastic, too, winning the PFA Player of the Month award in October.

Only, he went down with a long-term injury before the year was out. Matip ended up playing just 13 games.

So that’s two seasons in a row where Liverpool lost their first-choice defensive partnership. They rebounded to deliver a major trophy in both, however.

Now, obviously, this season is worse. Van Dijk is out as well as Gomez, meaning he’s not there to hold things together.

But it still stands that Liverpool have a history of adjusting to the situation and still delivering the biggest honours.

This season will be more of a challenge than ever, of course, but they’ve got as much experience as you could ask for to deal with it.

And with this start, they’re proving they can pull it off once again.
