Neco Williams could well have a target on his back when Liverpool host Wolves on Sunday. He should certainly prepare for it.
Neco Williams may have a target right on his back against Wolves today. That’s if he starts, of course.
Trent Alexander-Arnold could be fit enough to play – per the Express – but we’d be very surprised if he started the game. James Milner, another option, is out.
So Williams seems like the most likely right-back for Liverpool, in what could be his final Premier League start for some time.
If that is the case, Wolves may put him right smack in the middle of their gameplan.
Backup plan
Nuno Espirito Santo won’t have Raul Jimenez in his squad after the terrible injury last weekend. That means we’ll see a slightly different Wolves.
Fewer crosses into the box, you’d imagine, and even more emphasis on pace out wide. Which is where Williams comes in.
Wolves already play with pace outside, of course, but the players are just as likely to spread play and hit the byline than they are to cut inside. Without Jimenez as a target, however, cutting inside will surely be their main aim instead.
That means lots of Adama Traore and Pedro Neto running into the channels, looking for balls in behind.
And Williams would need to defend that. He’ll undoubtedly be Liverpool’s weakest defender, however, which makes him a target.
If you’re going to exploit a full-back, after all, who are you going to pick – the world’s best left-back or a 19-year-old kid in his first senior season?

Williams could use help, then. We’d expect Jurgen Klopp to see it coming, of course, and make sure Jordan Henderson or Gini Wijnaldum are on that side of the pitch.
The flip-side of this is that if Williams can handle being a target – with or without help – then Liverpool should be able to control Wolves today.
