Liverpool have had a tough time of it this season. There’s been injuries, illnesses and some bizarre VAR calls. Jürgen Klopp has still, somehow, managed to keep the Reds towards the top of the table. Last week saw one of our most frustrating refereeing calls. Liverpool fans were furious last night as Chelsea appeared to get away with a foul which cost Liverpool at Brighton.

Andy Robbo penalty

Liverpool didn’t play their best against Brighton last week.

It wasn’t a tremendously fluid performance by any means.

The Reds were often toothless and wasteful in possession.

However, a moment of brilliance from Diogo Jota managed to put Jürgen Klopp’s side in the lead.

In injury time the three points were snatched away as Brighton won and converted a penalty in controversial cirumstances.

VAR urged the referee to review his on field decision after he initially waved away a coming together between Andy Robertson and Danny Welbeck.

One rule for Liverpool another for Chelsea

Liverpool fans were furious last night as Chelsea appeared to get away with the same foul.

Ian Poveda nicked the ball past Ben Chilwell, only for the Blues defender to kick the Leeds United man’s foot on the way through.

It was a near carbon copy of the Liverpool incident. In fact, Welbeck wasn’t anywhere near the ball in the Brighton situation, whereas Poveda had actually got ahead to win the ball first.

As a result many fans took to Twitter to voice their concerns with refereeing consistency.

One Leeds fan argued that a player shouldn’t have to go down to win a pen.

We need consistency.

The officials got some stick.

Kopites were fuming.
