Emile Heskey backs Thiago return to help Takumi Minamino find form

Liverpool have made some shrewd signings in the past few years. Michael Edwards’ recruitment team have become the envy of the footballing world. They have been wheeling and dealing and snapping up diamonds in the rough at bargain prices. One of Edwards’ most recent signings is still settling in. Emile Heskey has told Rousing the Kop that he believes Thiago can help Takumi Minamino find some form.

Minamino at Liverpool

Liverpool signed Takumi Minamino from Red Bull Salzburg in January of this year.

The Japan international had impressed against the Reds over two legs in the Champions League group stage, scoring at Anfield.

Since arriving he’s struggled to establish himself in the first team.

We’ve seen glimpses of what Minamino is capable of but a combination of strong form in the first XI and injuries throughout the side have hampered Taki’s progress.

Emile Heskey on Minamino and Thiago

This weekend the 25-year-old utility man started in centre midfield for the Reds.

His performance against Brighton was somewhat subdued but this wasn’t entirely his fault.

Speaking to Emile Heskey, Rousing the Kop suggested that the ex-Salzburg man had picked up some dangerous positions but he wasn’t found by his teammates.

Emile Heskey told us that Takumi Minamino could benefit from playing with Thiago, saying:

“I found that he was far too deep in certain situations, we think of him as a 10 or a 9 but he was picking it up far too deep.

“He’s picking up decent enough positions and not getting the ball, not getting it early enough.

“So he’s dropping back to try and get the ball so you’re spoiling the flow of the game but it’s not necessarily his fault because he’s picking up good positions but not getting the ball.

“I think especially Thiago [can help Minamino], very rarely does he play sideways and backwards. He tries to play penetrative passes.

“If you’ve got the players playing between the lines he will find you and he doesn’t mind finding you with people around you as well.”

What RTK has to say

Fingers crossed Emile Heskey is right and Thiago can help Takumi Minamino.

When we faced the 25-year-old in the Champions League he was lethal.

He will surely recover that form in due time at Liverpool and he has plenty of time to do that but he also needs service in order to do that.

Taki needs the likes of Thiago to find him in those pockets of space, Gini Wijnaldum and James Milner sold him short at the weekend.
