Liverpool have been linked with a dozen defenders in recent months. The Reds are short of numbers at the back and need reinforcements immediately. One of the most frequently linked targets is a Champions League opponent. De Telegraaf in the Netherlands has claimed Liverpool can sign Perr Schuurs ‘immediately’ if they offer €30m (£27m).

Injury crisis

Jürgen Klopp is down to just one member of his starting back four.

The Reds have been ravaged by injuries this season, depleted by bad luck and an unforgiving fixture list.

Since the beginning of the season over a dozen players have been ruled out at one time or another.

Virgil van Dijk won’t play again this season due a ruptured ACL whilst Joe Gomez is unlikely to turn out again due to a knee injury of his own.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is the other absentee from the defence, the Scouser picked up a calf injury in the tie with Man City.

Liverpool can sign Perr Schuurs

Liverpool have been persistently linked with signing Perr Schuurs of Ajax.

The 21-year-old defender was on trial at Liverpool some years ago when he was playing for Fortuna Sittard.

Since then he has blossomed at Ajax and he put in a strong performance against the Reds in the Champions League this term.

Speaking to the De Telegraaf podcast, Mike Verweij said:

“An amount of thirty million will be attached [for Perr Schuurs]. If Marc Overmars gets the chance, I think he will do it immediately

“I checked at Ajax and there is no concrete interest from Liverpool.

“After the match against Liverpool, the Liverpool delegation was impressed by Schuurs. He is on a list.”

What RTK has to say

Liverpool signing Perr Schuurs makes a lot of sense.

The Dutchman fits the Reds transfer profile: he is young, athletic, good with the ball at his feet and comparativley inexpensive.

There is also the benefit of his nationality, meaning he would settle in quickly alongside Virgil van Dijk and Gini Wijnaldum.

At just £27m it should be hard for Liverpool to pass up the opportunity to bring in Perr Schuurs in January.
