Liverpool reportedly want to complete a transfer for Perr Schuurs from Ajax. Doing so could see them repeat a trick from last season.

Takumi Minamino really impressed against Liverpool last season. He certainly looked good to us – we immediately wrote that the Reds should keep an eye on him after his performance at Anfield a year ago.

Before 2019 was done, Liverpool had got into advanced talks for a £7m deal. They did so, according to the Guardian, because Minamino impressed the players and coaches in those two games.

That gave them a leg up on everyone else. Liverpool knew exactly how good Minamino was and completed their scouting in those two games.

That’s a trick they could repeat this season.

Familiar face

Corriere dello Sport believe Liverpool have made a £27m transfer off for Perr Schuurs. Whether or not Ajax will accept that, we don’t know – but it suggests the Reds like him.

And much like Minamino, Schuurs is a player they can see up close.

He faced Liverpool in Amsterdam earlier in their Champions League group, of course, and will likely do so again on Tuesday. It gives the Reds a prime opportunity to see exactly what the 20-year-old is capable of.

And they’ll need that extra scouting. Schuurs is yet to complete a top-flight season after last year’s campaign was cut short. There’s still plenty of unknown about him.

But Liverpool can once again get a leg up on any opposition for the defender. They’ll see exactly what he can do against Liverpool’s attack in a big game at Anfield.

Both teams will want a win in the qualification race, so this won’t be a quiet affair. It’ll truly test Schuurs as Jurgen Klopp may well play his best side.

And if Schuurs passes that test, then much like Minamino, we could see Liverpool move forward quickly.
