Neco Williams is going through some struggles with Liverpool. Fortunately, the Reds have the perfect player to guide him back to his best.
Neco Williams saw his struggles continue against Brighton. The teenager gave away a penalty in the first-half, although got away with it as Neal Maupay put it wide.
Still, it was the latest in a string of worrisome performances. Williams didn’t play well in midweek against Atalanta, frequently giving the ball away in poor positions.
While he’s still only 19 and learning, it will hurt Williams that he’s not playing well. That’s just natural for anyone.
Fortunately, he has the right player nearby to help him through a difficult period.
Captain fantastic
Jordan Henderson had difficulties of his own, of course. The Liverpool captain struggled for a role at the club for years and frequently had doubters.
The troubles became even worse once Steven Gerrard left the club. Henderson came across as his replacement, taking over the armband and playing the same position.
He was never going to replace Gerrard, of course – no one could.
But Henderson pushed through the criticism and the doubt to become a European and English champion. He even won the FWA Footballer of the Year award last season.
The success he has had, coupled with his role as leader, makes him perfect for Williams. Henderson has been through it all before and know how to come out the other side a champion.

That’s exactly what Williams needs right now. He needs guidance and an example to learn from and believe in. Henderson couldn’t be a better one – in either regard.
Williams still has years and years to go in football, of course. These are still very early days and his first full season at senior level. As long as he shows the ability to overcome a difficult start, he’s got a very bright future ahead of him.
