Fans haven’t been in grounds for what feels like years. It feels like an eternity. The global health crisis has meant that Kopites missed out on watching the Reds lift their first league title in 30 years, we’ve also missed their strong start to the title defence. In light of news that fans will be allowed to return stadiums, Joel Matip has said every player was waiting for this moment.

Fans to return to stadiums

This week the government announced plans for a staggered return of fans to sporting arenas.

Stadiums in tier one regions will be allowed up to 4,000 fans in.

Tier two grounds will be allowed up to 2,000 spectators at games.

Whilst tier three stadiums will continue to play games behind closed doors.

These changes will take place when the national lockdown ends on the 2nd of December.

Joel Matip on return of fans

Speaking at a pre-match press conference ahead of the Reds’ trip to Atalanta, Joel Matip spoke about the excitement of fans returning to stadiums.

The Cameroonian centre back is likely to be featuring heavily in the side as fans filter back in.

Given that Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk are unavailable for the remainder of the season, we can expect Joel to be there when we return.

The long limbed defender told the pre-match press conference:

“Every player was looking for this moment to see supporters back in.

“Everyone looking forward to seeing them back in the stands, yes.”

What RTK has to say

We’ve missed you too Joel, you big cuddly bath toy.

The Reds defender is surely right in saying that the players are buzzing to have fans back.

Having fans in the ground impacts a player’s performance, the supporters cheering you on helps you keep your concentration.

The supporters help you run that extra yard when you’re knackered, they let you know that your efforts are appreciated.

Hopefully we’ll have the ground full to capacity once again by the time we lift the title for the second season running.
