Report: Barcelona considering move for Joel Matip in January

Liverpool are down to the bare bones in central defence. The Reds have been ravaged by injuries and as a result Jürgen Klopp has been handing out appearances to academy starlets and once forgotten men. Despite the scarcity of senior defenders at the club, Barcelona are reportedly considering a move for Joel Matip in January.

Liverpool defence decimated

The Reds sold Dejan Lovren in the summer and decided not to replace him.

This left Jürgen Klopp with just three centre backs to start the season with, Fabinho acting as a makeshift fourth choice if needed.

Within weeks this gamble backfired.

Virgil van Dijk was ruled out for the season after rupturing his ACL in the Merseyside Derby courtesy of a reckless challenge from Jordan Pickford.

Since then we’ve also seen Joe Gomez sidelined for a majority of the campaign with a knee problem of his own.

As a result, Joel Matip is the only fit natural centre back remaining in the first team squad.

Barcelona want Joel Matip

According to Sport in Spain, Barcelona are weighing up a move for Joel Matip.

The Camp Nou side are said to be in the market for a centre back and a number of names have been touted as possible options.

Chelsea’s Antonio Rudiger is seen as a potential target, as well as Shkodran Mustafi of Arsenal.

Whilst Barcelona having an interest in Joel Matip is mentioned, the report concedes that Liverpool are unlikely to let the player go in January.

What RTK has to say

No chance mate.

The only way that Barcelona could sign Joel Matip this January would be if they forked out an unholy sum of money and we had three centre backs ready to come through the door on New Year’s Day.

If they want to give us £70m whilst we bring in Dayot Upamecano, Perr Schuurs and Ben White then sure.

Otherwise, this is utter nonsense. There’s no way we’d sell our last defender standing.
