Liverpool have had a torrid time with injuries this season. Jürgen Klopp has pleaded for mercy, he’s begged officials to permit more substitutions, to ease up on the scheduling – no dice. Instead, the powers that be have stood by as players have dropped like flies. Not all of our fitness issues have been due to fatigue though, our most decisive blow came in Derby day collision. Gini Wijnaldum has paid tribute to Virgil van Dijk after scoring twice for the Netherlands.
Van Dijk injury
The Virgil van Dijk injury is going to go down as one of the most controversial in our recent history.
The Dutchman was clattered into by Jordan Pickford in the Merseyside Derby, forcing the defender off the pitch.
The Everton keeper was, bizarrely, not red carded. A decision that caused quite a bit of confusion from fans and pundits alike.
We learned the day after the Derby that the centre back would miss the rest of the season with a ruptured ACL.
Wijnaldum tribute to Van Dijk
Gini Wijnaldum paid tribute to Virgil van Dijk after scoring twice for the Netherlands during the international break.
The Reds’ midfielder netted twice inside the first 13 minutes to put his side two up at the break against Bosnia Herzegovina.
After his second goal, Wijnaldum copied the celebration Van Dijk pulls out whenever he thumps home a header.
What RTK has to say
They’re missing Virgil just as much as we are.
It is no secret that the defender is a leader in the dressing room.
It must be a blow for his teammates to not have him in and around the dressing room at the moment.
It must be particularly difficult for his countryman Gini Wijnaldum, it’s nice to see he’s still looking out for his brother.
