Barcelona reportedly want a new ‘low-cost’ defender. Liverpool should have their eyes on those plans, too.

Sport claim that Barcelona are on the lookout for a new ‘low-cost’ defender. They’ve got their eyes on five – including Joel Matip.

Now, as we said here, the chances there are virtually zero. Liverpool would be suicidal to sell Matip now, given the injury crisis.

But that injury crisis is why Liverpool should keep an eye on what Barcelona are doing. The Reds, after all, could use a cheap centre-half for January themselves.

It’s likely not a market they have spent too much time looking at, however. Barcelona, on the other hand, entered a rebuild in the summer and this is an area they’ll have some expertise through supposed scouting.

Importantly, they’ll likely want a similar defender to Liverpool. They’ll want someone experienced, who can play a high-line and can slot in quickly.

One name in the article is interesting, then. They say Barcelona want German Pezzella, the Fiorentina captain.

The 29-year-old’s apparently available for around £13.5m – a very low price for an experienced pro. Pezzella certainly is experienced, too.

The Argentine has three years at La Viola under his belt, as well as two in La Liga with Real Betis. There are 16 caps with Argentina to go along with that, while he’s also got a past as a winner, picking up six different trophies with River Plate.

We think it’s one for Liverpool to consider, then. Pezzella can lead a defence, has experience all over the world – including major leagues – and his price is fantastic.
