Liverpool have got to sign a defender in January. An injury crisis has prompted a hunt for a centre back which will surely see a new arrival on New Year’s Day. Just who will come through the door is anybody’s guess – there’s been plenty of names mentioned. Ex-Bayern Munich defender Mario Basler has tipped Liverpool to sign David Alaba.
Liverpool don’t often gamble in the transfer market. Since Michael Edwards took over recruitment they haven’t got much wrong at all.
This summer the Reds made one big mistake: they sold Dejan Lovren and decided to not replace him.
This move left Jürgen Klopp with just three centre backs in the senior side. By mid October the boss was down to just one with Joel Matip sidelined and Virgil van Dijk out for the season.
Even the makeshift fourth choice, Fabinho, was ruled out with a hamstring injury.
Signing another defender appears to be an absolute priority for the club at the moment.
Liverpool and David Alaba
Former Bayern Munich defender Mario Basler has spoken about rumours surrounding Liverpool and David Alaba.
The current Bayern defender’s contract expires in the summer and with talks around a new deal reportedly halted, the expectation is that the Austrian will sign a pre-contract in January or Bayern will accept a cut price bid in the coming transfer window.
Speaking to Sport1-Fantalk, Mario Basler discussed the future of the versatile defender:
“The story with Alaba should really end with him going away.
“Maybe he’ll go to Liverpool. They have big problems with the injury to Van Dijk and the cruciate ligament rupture.
“He’s supposed to be out for a long time, and I think there’s a big need (to strengthen) in the central defender position.”
What RTK has to say
Liverpool signing David Alaba would make plenty of sense.
The Austrian would arrive very cheap which is a massive tick for Michael Edwards. He is also capable of playing near enough anywhere on the pitch, a massive tick for Jürgen Klopp.
Furthermore, the Bayern man has a real winning pedigree, he would bring experience of winning trophies regularly – a massive tick for the squad.
Whether or not there is any concrete interest remains to be seen. We’ll be hoping that there is interest and that it’s acted upon.
