Liverpool are going to sign a defender in January, no matter what they say, it’ll happen. Michael Edwards has no choice but to bring in reinforcements at the back. The question is simply: who will they sign? Amid persistent links, Schalke director Jochen Schneider has said he ‘cannot rule out’ Liverpool signing Ozan Kabak.
Liverpool injury crisis
Liverpool are down to just one fit centre back.
The club sold Dejan Lovren over the summer and, to the surprise of everybody, they neglected to replace him.
The move was questioned and it immediately backfired when Virgil van Dijk was ruled out for the season.
We have since seen Fabinho sidelined and Joel Matip struggle to return to fitness.
This has left Joe Gomez as the only fit centre half in the senior side – the Reds desperately need to sign another defender.
Liverpool and Ozan Kabak
The 20-year-old centre back is currently performing well for German Bundesliga side Schalke and has attracted the attention of a host of European sides.
The club’s Director of Football, Jochen Schneider, recently revealed interest from AC Milan and refused to rule out a sale – Waz quote the executive as saying:
“Milan knocked at the very end of the transfer period in the summer, which was out of the question for us, I’ve only read what has been written in the last ten days.
“We are still in economically challenging times, which you can see from the fact that this season may have to be played to the end without any spectators.
“I cannot and do not want to rule out anything.”
What RTK has to say
Liverpool are linked with Ozan Kabak every few days at this point.
The Turkish defender is emerging as a real candidate but he certainly isn’t seen as the forerunner – Dayot Upamecano appears to be the fan favourite target.
Perr Schuurs of Ajax has also emerged as a potential signing in the last week.
Ruled out or not, it remains to be seen how concrete the reported Liverpool interest in Kabak is. We’ll be watching this space.
