Liverpool need to sign a defender and they need to do so on the 1st of January. The Reds are short of numbers at the back, they have no option but to line up a deal to go through on New Year’s Day. One potential target is heading closer to an exit. If Liverpool are targeting David Alaba then they’ve received a decisive boost this weekend.

Liverpool defensive frailties

Liverpool had a great summer transfer window. The Reds brought in Thiago, impressing the footballing world with their ability to pull off such a move for such a bargain price.

Diogo Jota was also brought in, much to the surprise of many. The Portuguese star has hit the ground running, netting winning goals for fun.

However, the Reds not signing a replacement for the outgoing Dejan Lovren raised some eyebrows. Many questioned the wisdom of starting the season with just three centre backs. The gamble backfired nearly immediately and the club now have just Joe Gomez fit to start at centre back.

Liverpool should move for David Alaba

We can keep repeating this until we’re blue in the face. If the finances for his wages are in line then Liverpool should move for David Alaba.

The Austrian international is out of contract next summer meaning that the Reds can sign him up to a pre-contract in January.

Given his experience, winning pedigree and versatility, he is an ideal replacement for the ageing James Milner.

Liverpool David Alaba boost

If Liverpool do decide to pursue David Alaba then they’ve received a boost to their pursuit in recent days.

Bayern Munich president Herbert Hainer has reportedly confirmed that contract talks are off after the two parties were unable to reach an agreement. The chief told BR24Sport:

“The answer was that the offer is still unsatisfactory and that we should think further. Now we have decided to take the offer off the table completely. That means: There is no more offer.”

This quote surely means that Alaba won’t be signing a new deal, meaning that Bayern are resigned to losing him and could do business in January for a bargain fee should a side look to bring him in sooner rather than later.

Fingers crossed Michael Edwards is throwing our hat into the ring here. He’d be an ideal arrival, fans are excited – one called him a ‘perfect’ signing.
