Liverpool have had some world class footballers don the red shirt down the years. We have been treated to magical moments from magical players, if you’re going to be one of the biggest clubs in history you’re going to boast an embarrassment of these stars over the years. One of our former greats has come in for some high praise – Diego Maradona has said he wishes he played alongside Ian Rush.

Ian Rush legend
What can we say about Ian Rush? His long lists of accolades and achievements speak for themselves.
The Welsh icon is the club’s all time leading goal scorer with a phenomenal 346 goals during his time with the Reds.
Rush joined from Chester City in 1980 and played for Liverpool until 1996, joining Juventus for one season in the middle of the 80s.
His importance to the club cannot be overstated, he was named 3rd in a fan poll entitled 100 Players Who Shook the Kop.
Diego Maradona on Ian Rush
Diego Maradona turned 60-years-old this week. The legendary Argentine forward was praised by the good and the great as they offered well wishes the football icon.
Ian Rush posted two photos of himself and the ex-Napoli man on Instagram, declaring him to be the best player he ever faced.
Maradona replied to Rush on his post, saying how he wished they’d played together:
“I would have loved to play by your side. We would have made an unstoppable tandem. Thank you very very much Ian.
“All my respect and admiration for you my friend!!! Btw I love these pictures.”
What RTK has to say
Diego Maradona and Ian Rush would’ve surely gone down as one of the all time greatest striking partnerships.
The pair are legends in their own right, it would have been incredible to see them alongside one another.
The vision and creativity of Maradona would’ve complimented the finishing and positioning of Rush perfectly.
Alas, we can only dream, or edit computer games to see how it would have turned out.
