Liverpool have had awful luck this weekend. The Reds have been robbed of their strongest defender due to a thuggish challenge from Jordan Pickford. They were also robbed of a win by poor officiating. It another potential blow for the club, Liverpool will have to assess Joel Matip ahead of the Ajax tie on Wednesday.
Virgil van Dijk injury
On Saturday we saw one of the worst tackles in the Premier League’s recent history.
It is generous to even call it a tackle, it was more of a reckless lunge from Jordan Pickford as he threw himself at Virgil van Dijk.
The Everton shot stopper was somehow allowed to remain on the pitch with the officials neglecting to send him off for his horror challenge.
The keeper went on to make a string of point saving saves in the game whilst Van Dijk received treatment.
Joel Matip could miss Ajax game
According to James Pearce, Liverpool will continue to assess Joel Matip ahead of the Ajax game on Wednesday.
The Cameroonian defender complained of discomfort on Saturday and was sent for a scan.
The issue is said to be nothing major but the club aren’t 100% on his fitness ahead of the Champions League group stage opener this week.
What RTK has to say
Just our luck eh.
If we lose Joel Matip ahead of the Ajax tie then we’ll have to throw Fabinho into the back four, potentially leaving us with a midfield of Jordan Henderson, Gini Wijnaldum and Naby Keita – should Keita be available for selection.
What a nightmare, when it rains it pours, something about buses, death comes in threes, whatever cliche you want. This is just awful news.
