Virgil van Dijk has suffered an injury that may rule him out for the season. Here are three Liverpool players the Reds must rely on after the update.
Liverpool have announced that Virgil van Dijk will undergo surgery after suffering a knee injury against Everton. There’s no ‘specific timescale’ on his return but we can assume he’ll be out for some time.
So here are three players that Liverpool must rely on to get them through the season.
We could have included Joel Matip here, too, but the Cameroonian is struggling with injury himself. Liverpool can’t afford to rely on Matip right now and Gomez is the first-team fixture.
He’ll likely play near enough every game going forward in what will be a huge season for him. But he’s started the season poorly, looking quite awful against Aston Villa.
Liverpool need him to step up in a season that could be the making of him.
This will now be a strange season for Fabinho. He’s the most important defensive player in the team now, as the shield in front of the back four. Liverpool will naturally look to him to be the difference defensively.
But Fabinho is also the fourth-choice centre-half this season. If Matip is out or Gomez is struggling, he’ll have to slot into the backline and effectively fill the Van Dijk void.
No matter what, Liverpool will ask a lot of Fabinho this season.
When the going gets tough, Henderson gets Liverpool going. In fact, their most disastrous results in 2020 have come when he’s not there. The captain missed Liverpool lose 3-0 to Watford and he was conspicuously absent in the 7-2 against Aston Villa.
Henderson is the player who holds the mentality together. He’s the driving force and the composure in the middle.
This season just got an awful lot tougher and Henderson will be more important than ever as a result.
