Liverpool have had some iconic captains down the year. From Kenny Dalglish to Alan Hansen to Steven Gerrard, we’ve seen some of the game’s greatest don the armband for the Reds. According to ex-Liverpool star Dominic Matteo, current captain Jordan Henderson is an ideal role model for Kalvin Phillips.
Rise of Kalvin Phillips
Defensive midfielder Kalvin Phillips joined the Leeds United academy at 14-years-old.
Since then he has risen through the ranks at Elland Road and made 185 senior appearances for the club.
At just 24-years-old he is already an experienced head in the Yorkshire side’s midfield.
His impressive form in the Championship and during the start of this Premier League season earned the Leeds man a call up to the England squad.
Jordan Henderson role model for Kalvin Phillips
According to ex-Liverpool star Dominic Matteo, Jordan Henderson is an ideal role model for Kalvin Phillips.
The former Reds’ midfielder used his column in the Yorkshire Evening Post to outline why the Leeds man should look to the Anfield skipper for inspiration:
“[Phillips’] opportunity was thoroughly deserved and he hasn’t looked out of place.
“In Jordan Henderson, he’s got a shining example and he can look at everything Jordan does, the way he speaks, what he says.
“Kalvin can learn a lot from being in and around the England set-up and his next challenge is to get into the team regularly.”
What RTK has to say
If there is a role model in that England side it is Jordan Henderson.
The Reds captain soldiered on through the difficult years at Anfield to earn the club’s armband and has since taken us to European, English and world championships.
Jordan Henderson can teach Kalvin Phillips a thing or two about determination, dedication and a few things about actually playing football too I imagine.
It is encouraging to see that the Reds’ skipper is getting the credit he deserves for the hard work he’s put in over the years.
