Report: Barcelona could move for Gini Wijnaldum in January

Liverpool have made some fantastic transfer decisions this summer. The Reds set down a marker with the signing of Thiago Alcantara, they shocked everybody with the transfer of Diogo Jota. One of the club’s smartest decisions may have been keeping ahold of one of their stars. However, reports in Spain have claimed that Barcelona could move for Gini Wijnaldum in January.

Gini Wijnaldum superstar

Few players embody Jürgen Klopp’s gegenpressing philosophy better than Gini Wijnaldum.

The Dutchman has been one of the most determined exponents of the intense defensive approach that the gaffer employs.

Despite arriving at Anfield as goal grabbing attacking midfielder, he has been transformed into a dynamo in the midfield – constantly hounding the opposition when out of possession.

Over the summer there were numerous reports that Barcelona wanted to sign Gini Wijnaldum.

As soon as Ronald Koeman took over at the Camp Nou the rumours started, papers insisting that he wanted to bring his countrymen to Catalonia.

One outlet went as far as to claim that Koeman had made the Reds’ midfielder his ‘top priority’.

Mundo Deportivo have now claimed that Barcelona will try and sign Gini Wijnaldum in January, as part of a triple swoop along with Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia.

What RTK has to say

Given that the Dutchman is in the final year of his contract at Anfield, the Blaugrana will be free to negotiate a pre-contract with Gini from January.

The Reds could be forced to negotiate a sale in January otherwise they run the risk of losing the midfielder on a free in the summer.

Fingers crossed it won’t come to this. The 29-year-old still has years left at the top, he has some engine in him, his athleticism should see him through until his early to mid 30s.

It would be heartbreaking to lose him but we’ll back whatever decision he makes, he deserves that.
