Liverpool have made some smart buys this summer. The club have also made some smart sales. One of the club’s best transfer moves was one that didn’t happen, keeping hold of one of their most vital midfielders. However, Ronald Koeman has hinted that Barcelona still want Gini Wijnaldum.
Barcelona chased Wijnaldum
Ronald Koeman was appointed manager of Barcelona over the summer.
After the Catalan club were humiliated 8-2 by Bayern Munich, Quique Setien was sacked and replaced with the ex-Barca defender.
As soon as the Dutchman was appointed there were numbers that Barcelona wanted Wijnaldum. Sport claimed in August that the new manager had made signing Gini a ‘non-negotiable priority’.
Barcelona may still want Wijnaldum
Ronald Koeman has seemingly hinted that Barcelona still want to sign Gini Wijnaldum.
The Dutchman is in the final year of his contract at Anfield, meaning that he can negotiate a pre-contract with another side from January.
Koeman told NOS that Wijnaldum ‘was on his list’ and ‘Hopefully, [Barcelona] will have a second Dutchman in the squad.’
What RTK has to say
Hands off Ronnie.
Gini Wijnaldum is crucial to the Liverpool system, he is a pressing machine, he is determined and irrepressible.
We saw against Arsenal just what he brings to the side, hounding opposition defenders with just moments remaining in the game.
Fingers crossed we can sort out negotiations with Gini and hang on to him for another season two. It would be devastating to lose him to the likes of Barcelona.
Alternatively, we can hope that the next Dutchman that Koeman wants at Barca is Memphis Depay, the Blaugrana were strongly linked with the ex-Manchester United man during the summer.
