Jordan Henderson has hailed Kevin De Bruyne as the best in the world at their position. The duo battled over individual awards last season.
Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson admits he voted for rival Kevin De Bruyne as PFA Player of the Year last season. In fact, Henderson believes De Bruyne is the best midfielder in the world.
“I voted for Kevin in the PFA awards and couldn’t speak highly enough of him as a player,” he said, per the Liverpool Echo. “He deservedly won PFA Player of the Year. I thought he was outstanding last season. But he’s been outstanding for a long time.
“He’s a world-class player, probably the best midfield player in the world. I feel as though he’s classy on and off the pitch. I’m a really big fan.”
Henderson voted for De Bruyne despite him being a key rival for the award, then. Both made the shortlist for the PFA Player of the Year award, with the Belgian eventually winning.
The Liverpool captain was firmly in the running himself, however, after winning the Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year award.
What RTK has to say
In truth, you’d expect nothing less from Henderson. He’s about as professional as it gets and it’s no surprise to see him hail De Bruyne as the best around.
It’s despite a true rivalry between the two, though. They’re key players for the two biggest clubs in England and have dueled for honours over the last few years.
Last season, the duo took that rivalry to individual awards as they split the main ones.
But Henderson is absolutely right. We love the Liverpool captain here and regard him as an elite player. De Bruyne, however, is the world’s best midfielder and has been since his £55m move to Manchester City. He’s a level above just about everyone else, in fact – although, we do hope Thiago competes with him this season.
