Liverpool have had some wonderfully talented midfielders down the years. Some have had their careers curtailed by injury, Lucas Leiva is one of the foremost examples of what could have been, as is Momo Sissoko. Another example just left the club and has opened up on the circumstances surrounding his departure, Adam Lallana has detailed a brutally honest conversation with Jürgen Klopp.
Lallana at Liverpool
Liverpool bought then Southampton captain Adam Lallana in 2015 for a fee of £25m.
The England international had a strong start to life on Merseyside but injuries quickly became the bane of his career at Anfield.
Whenever he played he dazzled us with his footwork, flair and vision. However, he wasn’t able to play often enough as he struggled with his fitness.
Eventually the midfielder was allowed to run down his contract and leave on a free transfer, joining Brighton & Hove Albion this summer.
Lallana on Klopp conversation
Speaking to BBC Radio 5Live, Adam Lallana opened up on a conversation he had with Jürgen Klopp about his future at Anfield, the midfielder told the show:
“We have a great relationship and I just said ‘what’s it looking like for me next year?’. I know I’m out of contract and I know I’m not playing regularly.
“Although I had a pretty big role in the squad around the team, I wanted a bit of honesty. He basically said to me in October, ‘get your agent to start looking for another club’.
“That doesn’t mean you’re not in my plans or he isn’t going to use me. Four days later he brought me on at Old Trafford and I scored the equaliser and I think that shows what type of person Jurgen is. He’s very honest.
“He said to me I deserve to be playing more and I deserve more game time and to be playing more.”
What RTK has to say
The value of honesty shines through here. The boss was straightforward with the player and days later he scored one of our most memorable goals of our title winning season.
It is sad that he isn’t here any longer but the move has worked out well for everybody, he’s played in every one of the Seagulls’ Premier League games so far this season.
A player as talented as Lallana deserves that sort of regular game time. Fingers crossed we’ll see him capitalise on the opportunities.
