The five years we have spent with Jürgen Klopp have been magical. The gaffer came in when confidence was low and the fan base were dejected. In the years since he has thoroughly achieved his aim of turning doubters into believers. On the anniversary of his appointment, Jürgen Klopp has spoken about the first time he became aware of the Liverpool interest.
The Normal Messiah
Brendan Rodgers was sacked on the 4th of October 2015.
The news came as a shock to some, he had just avoided defeat in the Merseyside Derby but the Reds were 10th in the table and hadn’t had a good season the term before.
Then, on the 8th of October 2015, five years ago today, Jürgen Klopp was appointed manager of Liverpool FC.
The German made it his mission to turn doubters into believers; three European finals, a club world cup, a Champions League and a Premier League trophy later, we can safely say he achieved his aims.
Klopp on Liverpool interest
Speaking to the official club site, Jürgen Klopp has discussed when he first became aware of the Liverpool interest in his services:
“I cannot forget the moment when I got the call from my agent that Liverpool is interested. And the feeling I had in that moment…We were in Portugal, in Lisbon, with the family, both boys were with us…
“Actually I didn’t take a lot of phone calls in that time, it was like: ‘Come on, don’t bother me.’ But then I saw it and it was like I had a feeling it could be something interesting. So I take the phone and he tells me, and I felt the excitement inside.
“I couldn’t immediately say: ‘Yes! Let’s do it!’ I had to ask [my family]: ‘What’s your opinion?’ I still remember both boys were like: ‘Yes!’ We look at Ulla and she looked at all three of us: ‘Oh, it looks like the holiday is over!’
“But this very first moment when I got aware of the interest of Liverpool was already pretty special. And from that moment on it got better and better.”
What RTK has to say
It was a match made in heaven, perhaps it was fate that Jürgen just had that feeling that it could be an interesting phone call.
To think of that moment eh, the boss sunning it up in Portugal, lager in hand, about to be offered a job that would change his life and all of ours.
Long may he reign, here’s to another five years Jürgen, if you’ll stay that is.
