Liverpool coasted to victory at the weekend. The Reds visited supposed title contenders Chelsea with Frank Lampard fielding a pair of Bundesliga megabucks buys. However, the West London side’s glamour purchases failed to make any impact in the tie. Timo Werner failed to score despite the Reds being without two first team centre backs. Jürgen Klopp has issued a Joe Gomez and Joel Matip injury update.

Reds coast to victory

There was a shock selection in defence on Sunday when Fabinho was named alongside Virgil van Dijk.

The Brazilian dropped into the back four due to injuries to Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.

However, there was no cause for concern. Fabby dominated the game from the back.

Timo Werner wasn’t given a sniff as the holding midfielder put in a Man of the Match performance.

Gomez and Matip injury update

Speaking to Liverpool’s official site after the game, Jürgen Klopp issued a Joe Gomez and Joel Matip injury update.

The Reds gaffer told the site:

“Joe actually should be fine. It was not now really a big one but we have to see. We should be fine Monday already.”

“With Joel, it could be slightly different. It’s not the worst thing in the world but a few weeks, a couple of weeks. Probably after the international break he will be ready again. So we have to see. It’s not cool.

“It’s crazy, in one day ‘bam bam’ but we have Fabinho and he played an exceptional game, so that was really, really nice.”

What RTK has to say

It is a shame that Joel Matip is having such a torrid time with injuries of late.

There was a good nine month period where he was one of the best centre backs in the world on form.

He struck up an impenetrable partnership with Virgil van Dijk and will be now kicking himself having missed so much football due to injury.

Fingers crossed we do see Gomez back in time for Monday’s visit from Arsenal, although, if he isn’t fit then we we know we can rely on Fabinho to step in his place.
