Liverpool have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich. The Reds have been linked with the Spaniard all summer and have now finally pulled the deal off after keeping fans on tenterhooks for months. It feels great. Liverpool signing Thiago will be the Reds’ biggest statement transfer of this century so far, here is three reasons why:
Thiago Alcantara has won it all.
The Spaniard has won two league titles in Spain, seven league titles in Germany, scores of domestic cups and, of course, he’s lifted the Champions League for both Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
Thiago is arriving with a world class CV. Sure, Virgil van Dijk was a big statement signing, as was Fernando Torres – neither player had a CV anything like Thiago’s.
World class category
When was the last time Liverpool signed a player commonly said to be in the top three in the world in his position?
Sure, since signing for the Reds, we have seen Virgil elevated to the status of the world’s best centre back.
With this one, we’re buying a player already in that bracket. In fact, he may well be the best deep lying playmaker in the world right now.
Kevin de Bruyne is, of course, in that conversation but he isn’t as deep lying as Thiago, the Belgian is a much more advanced player.
Acting like champions
Liverpool are about to sign Thiago right after he won the Champions League. We are signing the European champions’ best midfielder.
Manchester United, when they were dominating football, would make a signing like this each season. They would buy a rivals’ star player like it was nothing, and it worked. The Robin Van Persie move was a masterstroke.
Liverpool are acting like champions with this move. The Reds are swaggering. We are making a statement with this signing. We are going out and bringing in one of the best in the world from a team sure to challenge us for the Champions League next season.
