Liverpool have been keen on hoovering up young talent in recent years. The Reds have brought in Sepp van den Berg and Harvey Elliott, Melkamu Frauendorf and now Marcelo Pitaluga. However, Jeremy Doku decided against a move to Liverpool. The Belgian winger has admitted that Romelu Lukaku advised him against the transfer but he has said it wasn’t a crucial factor in his decision.
Who is Jeremy Doku?
18-year-old winger Jeremy Doku is establishing himself as the crown prince of Belgian football.
The Anderlecht wide man has been impressing for club and country recently.
Last season the youngster broke into the first team at the Jupiler League side, netting three goals and bagging three assists in 21 appearances.
This term he has one goal and one assist in his first five games, along with a magnificent effort for Belgium during his first call up to international duty.
Kevin de Bruyne is a massive fan, he told Reuters that Doku is a ‘diamond in the rough’.
Jeremy Doku and Liverpool
It is well documented that Jeremy Doku was courted by Liverpool a couple of years ago – Goal reported this summer on how the Reds rolled out the big guns with Jürgen Klopp and Steven Gerrard chatting with the youngster at Melwood.
Het Nieuwsblad reported in the last week that Jeremy Doku is once again wanted by Liverpool.
Speaking to De Zondag over the weekend the youngster was asked what the most difficult moment of his career has been so far, the youngster answered:
“That was when I was fifteen and I had to choose between staying with Anderlecht or going to Liverpool.”
When asked if Romelu Lukaku advising him to stay in Belgium was a crucial factor to his decision, Doku replied:
“No. He advised me to stay, but from the beginning my goal was to stay. At least if Anderlecht was willing to make an effort, which they eventually did. My parents and my manager know this very well.
“My father wanted me to go to Liverpool and my mother too, but I said, “No, I want to stay”. For me that was the best path and it has always been in my head. I did listen to Romelu’s advice, but I make decisions about my future myself.”
What RTK has to say
I like this lad.
He is self assured, he as a good head on his shoulders. He made a mature decision opting to stay, as he pointed out recently, if he’s good enough then Liverpool will come back for him.
It is no surprise that Lukaku advised him to stay, he knows too well how tough the Premier League is and how hard it is to establish yourself here.
The youngster will get vital game time by staying in Belgium, learning his trade before making an inevitable step up.
