Liverpool don’t need to do much with their first team squad before the start of the new season. The only area the club could strengthen in is depth. The Reds could do with an extra forward, a dynamic midfielder and – following the departure of Dejan Lovren – a new fourth choice centre back. Fabinho could become the fourth choice centre back if Liverpool manage to sign Thiago.
Fourth choice gap
The departure of Dejan Lovren has left Liverpool with a gap in defence.
The Croatian had been the fourth choice centre back for the Reds, an important role given the injury records of Joel Matip and Joe Gomez.
Now that the World Cup finalist has left Merseyside for Zenit in Russia the gaffer will need to fill his place in the squad.
Fabinho at centre back
We have seen Fabinho play as a centre back before.
The Brazilian, signed from Monaco for £43.7m, was deployed in the heart of defence when the Reds held Bayern Munich to a goalless draw on the way to winning the Champions League.
We could well see the lanky midfielder reprise his role at centre half this season, the Reds don’t seem willing to splash out on a new defender.
Liverpool signing Thiago impact
With all signs pointing to Gini Wijnaldum leaving for Barcelona, Liverpool signing Thiago would be crucial to Fabinho being able to be deployed as a fourth choice centre back.
The Spaniard is defensively disciplined, often playing as Bayern Munich’s deepest midfielder.
This means that should Fabby need to drop into defence we would be able to rely on Thiago to fill in with Jordan Henderson also in a deeper role.
We wouldn’t be able to put Fabinho into the defence without having a player of Thiago’s discipline, particularly given the potential departure of Gini Wijnaldum.
