Potentially 'devastating' Henderson injury could benefit Curtis Jones

The Premier League title is all wrapped up and all that is left to play for is records and places in the starting lineup next season. Each game from here on out is primarily an audition in front of Jürgen Klopp – can you still give it your all when it doesn’t matter anymore? Can you prove you are better than the guy next to you? Jordan Henderson picked up a potentially ‘devastating’ injury this week but the knock could benefit Curtis Jones.

What happened?

The skipper scored a blinder inside the first eight minutes against Brighton, making it 2-0 to the Reds. All in all he had a solid game, he was tenacious in the middle of the park and useful with the ball.

The Englishman was forced off after 80 minutes with a knee injury sustained in a collision with Yves Bissouma. After the game Jürgen Klopp said, “we have to wait. I didn’t see it back but I know it will not be nothing.”

Speaking to Premier League Productions after the game, Tim Sherwood said it would be “devastating” for the captain if he was injured and unable to take part when Chelsea visit Anfield, the Reds are scheduled to lift the Premier League trophy after the game.

Perfect timing?

It is never good to see such an important player pick up an injury but if you had to pick a time of the season for it to happen you would pick now, when there is nothing left to play for.

The injury to Jordan Henderson could see Curtis Jones afforded more game time. Whilst the two perform very different roles the Reds are having to rotate regularly as it is due to a combination of fixture congestion and players returning to fitness following the prolonged break from football.

Jürgen Klopp has said that he isn’t giving appearances out like Christmas presents but this injury could force the issue. Jones has already shown that he is determined to stake his claim for a place in the side having capped off a fine substitute appearance against Aston Villa with a goal.

Significant game time for Curtis Jones at the end of this season could serve to further convince Klopp that the Scouser can take on a more important role next season, the action will also provide vital experience to the youngster.
