Matip injury confirms Klopp needs to make signing in defence

There isn’t very much that Liverpool have to do in the transfer market this summer. The Reds have just won the league by a country mile and their starting lineup is as strong as anybody’s. However, a recent Joel Matip injury must have surely confirmed to Jürgen Klopp that he needs reinforcements at centre back.

The Liverpool defence is one of the meanest in Europe. Jürgen Klopp’s side have conceded the fewest goals in the Premier League this season, and even though he missed the first two months of the campaign Alisson Becker is tied in the lead for the Golden Glove.

Despite the solidity of the backline there are concerns about injuries. In the last two seasons the Reds’ backline has seen Joel Matip and Joe Gomez miss extended periods through injury.

Most recently Joel Matip was forced off against Everton and has since been ruled out for the remainder of the season. With Dejan Lovren rumoured to be heading for the exit door this summer Jürgen Klopp should be looking to strengthen the depth of his defensive options.

The most sensible option would be Ben White, on loan at Leeds United from Brighton and Hove Albion. Sky Sports are just one of a number of outlets to have reported the Reds’ interest in the defender.

The 22-year-old has been a standout performer throughout the Yorkshire side’s title charge in the Championship. White possesses all the attributes necessary to play in a Jürgen Klopp defence: he reads the game well, is composed on the ball and has an eye for a pass.

Now that the gaffer is faced with a further reminder of the fragility of his backline he must surely be looking to resolve the issue with young talent. At 22-years-old Ben White would be a valuable understudy, he could provide solid cover whilst improving under the tutelage of Virgil van Dijk.

The Reds don’t need to do much this summer but this is one issue they can’t afford to ignore.
