Jurgen Klopp confirmed Joel Matip’s injury ahead of Manchester City v Liverpool. Two players are back in training, however.
Asked about potential injury troubles, the Liverpool boss gave a quick update ahead of the City game.
“Not yet. Nothing. The one with Joel [Matip] you know. That’s not nice,” Klopp said in his pre-match press conference, per the Echo. “But that is all for the moment.”
Matip himself broke that news yesterday, revealing that he’ll likely miss the rest of the season to Liverpoolfc.com. And Klopp confirms that – we won’t see the defender again before the next campaign, then.
On the brighter side, both James Milner and Xherdan Shaqiri are back training. Milner started in Liverpool’s return to action against Everton but went off injured.
That ruled him out of the game against Crystal Palace but the 34-year-old appears to be an option against City.
Similarly, Shaqiri is back working at Melwood. The Swiss winger hasn’t featured at all since getting under a minute against Tottenham Hotspur in January.
In fact, you have to go all the way back to mid-December for his last Premier League start. Injury issues have severely limited his game time and while he’s back training, he’ll surely need a bit more time before getting significant minutes.
Still, he’s an option against City, it seems.
Milner is far and away the more likely to feature, of course. Klopp could use him to rest players in midfield or even Andy Robertson at left-back.
Although, we imagine it’ll be a substitute’s role for him on Thursday. You can see our predicted line-up here.
