Liverpool look highly unlikely sign Timo Werner but their other reported summer target is still available. Houssem Aouar could still make the move.

Despite links dating back over six months, Liverpool won’t be signing Werner. Multiple outlets say the Reds have pulled out of the race, with Sky Sports saying it was down to finances.

It’s certainly a shame. Werner is a top player and one who would have made an exciting arrival at Anfield. But he wasn’t the only target, apparently.

The Mirror claimed at the start of May that Liverpool had two targets for the summer. The first was Werner, the second was Lyon’s Aouar.

Now, the same report says the Reds are ‘virtually certain’ to do no business. Missing out on Werner does back that up but then the Independent claim it’s not quite that simple.

They say that Liverpool didn’t so much rule out Werner as played things very cautiously. They didn’t want to spend big money right now and hoped to wait things out. Chelsea’s move forced them to pull out, however.

And so we may see the same with Aouar, the other key target alongside Werner. He’d apparently cost around £40m and according to reports in France, Liverpool are still ‘very interested’ in a player who is reportedly up for sale.

So we may still see Liverpool get what they want this summer – even if it isn’t everything they want. Aouar is a very good player and one who’s still available.

Importantly, he’s cheaper than Werner, too. Perhaps the Frenchman makes more financial sense, then. If the Reds decide he does, we may still get a very exciting arrival this summer.
