Liverpool held an 11 v 11 training session at Anfield on Monday and if highlighted their incredible defensive potential. It may be unparalleled in football.
The Liverpool Echo reported on the training session. In their piece, they laid out the two teams the Reds put against one another and for us, one thing stood out in particular.
That’s the right side of the team’s respective defences. On one, you’ve got Liverpool’s first-choice of Joe Gomez as the centre-half and Trent Alexander-Arnold as the right-back.
That, of course, is Liverpool’s first-choice partnership on that side. On the other team, however, Liverpool went with academy players – Ki-Jana Hoever next to Neco Williams.
Our instinct when we first saw that was ‘the future of Liverpool’s defence’. The duo look insanely talented and have both made their senior debuts despite each being 18 when football paused.
Williams, in particular, looks imminent for the first-team. Hoever has always looked likely to make it, too, hence his debut at just 16 in 2019.
The crazy thing is that they shouldn’t really be the future, though. Any other team would be looking at Alexander-Arnold and Gomez as the future, given that neither is near their prime.
Gomez has only just turned 23 and Alexander-Arnold is still just 21 – both could have ten years at the top, if things go their way. And yet, both are already established, elite players.
It goes to show the incredible defensive potential at Liverpool. Even with two young, formidable talents in the first-team, there are two more to be almost equally excited about.
The problem now if how does Jurgen Klopp get them all in the squad?
