March '19: Liverpool fans debate Ben Chilwell rumours - what happened?

The football has been gone for what feels like years now and it won’t be returning for at least another month. Whilst we all twiddle our thumbs we are going to be looking back at The Reds’ recent history, examining how things could have been different. This time last year Liverpool fans were debating links with Ben Chilwell.

Chilwell has risen through the ranks at Leicester City.

The 23-year-old left back has rapidly become one of the best left backs in the country and is sure to be the first choice for Gareth Southgate at Euro 2020 2021.

He has regularly been linked with a big money move away from the King Power Stadium. This time last year CalcioMercato reported that Liverpool were interested in taking Ben Chilwell from Leicester City.

The Telegraph reported around the same time that it would take around £75m to convince the Foxes to part with their academy product.

Liverpool fans, as collated by HITC, were less than convinced by the rumours. The general consensus was that there was no point splashing out on a left back when we already have the best left sided wingback in the world in Andy Robertson.

They have a point, in the whole of last season Chilwell registered just four assists in the league in comparison to Robbo’s 11.

What happened next?

Nothing. The Englishman is still at Leicester City, Manchester City’s reported interest appears to have subsided for now at least.

The Foxes have no cause to sell him, Brendan Rodgers has steered the club into a Champions League spot, they are only on the up. The finances involved with Champions League qualification mean they won’t be forced into flogging their top players.

Whilst we could do with an understudy for Robbo, we’re glad we didn’t fork out £75m for one.
