Liverpool are lucky at the moment. The Reds have the strongest squad in world football and the lads are at an age where they have at least a few more seasons together before players are phased out. Some are younger than others, we boast the best right back on earth and he’s just 21-years-old. Despite Trent Alexander-Arnold’s virtues, Jamie Carragher has claimed Aaron Wan-Bissaka is the ‘best one-on-one full back in the world’.
Trent has established himself as the globe’s best right back thanks to his creativity.
The Scouser last season broke the record for assists for a defender in a Premier League campaign, he has already matched that tally with nine games to go.
Manchester United’s defender is a much different style of player, he is pretty useless going forward. United signed their right back from Crystal Palace over the summer, forking out an extraordinary £50m for the 22-year-old.
Speaking on Sky Sports Monday Night Football, Jamie Carragher was full of praise for Wan-Bissaka:
“Most full-backs get tight to quick wingers because of their pace and trickery. Not Aaron Wan-Bissaka. He stands off and says ‘Bring it on.’ I actually think he is the best 1 on 1 full-back in the world.”
What RTK has to say
Fair enough Jamie.
We cannot deny that Wan-Bissaka is an incredible defender, his defiance when facing up to an attacker is impressive, he is rarely beaten.
However, a modern full back needs to do more than simply stop attackers, the Red Devils’ right back offers very little going forward, he has just two assists in the league this season.
Of course, our two teams play different systems but he is often in the right positions, Wan-Bissaka just can’t cross. He may be a better one-on-one defender than Trent but our Scouser is streaks ahead in every other aspect of the game.
