Liverpool have made some incredible signings over the years but few have completely transformed the club in the way that Virgil van Dijk has. The Dutchman has proved to be one of the signings of the century for The Reds, Van Dijk has been described as ‘out of this world’ by Sven-Goran Eriksson.
Liverpool signed Big Virg from Southampton in January 2018 in a £75m deal.
At the time the club were ridiculed for the world record transfer fee, it now appears to be something of a bargain.
His influence on the Liverpool defence can’t be underestimated, he has improved any defender has played alongside, most recently elevating Joe Gomez to one of the best around.
Ex-England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has been full of praise for the Dutchman.
Speaking to The Times, the Swedish gaffer said:
“This Liverpool have everything, and the best thing they did is buy Van Dijk.
“You can attack with a lot of people because he will always sort out one against one at the back. If you have Van Dijk you can do whatever you want, he is out of this world.”
What RTK has to say
Virgil van Dijk is everything that Eriksson has said and more.
The Dutchman can feel hard done by to not be considered one of the frontrunners for the PFA Player of the Year award, he has set such high standards for himself that it almost appears that pundits have gotten bored of praising him.
Without Virgil this Liverpool team wouldn’t he half the side it is, his influence has helped instill a calmness into a shaky defence and his presence has raised the game of any partner he has had.
He is out of this world and he will likely go down as the club’s best ever defender.
