Reports claim Liverpool bid for Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze last month. That potential deal doesn’t make sense anymore, however.
France Football say that Liverpool bid £29.5m for Chukwueze in January but the Spaniards rejected it. They instead want £54m for their winger – a fee both Liverpool and Chelsea will supposedly look at.
Chukwueze certainly ticks some boxes for Liverpool – in fact, we wrote back in September that he would be a good target. He’s only 20 and yet has nearly two years of La Liga experience. He’s a quick winger – something Liverpool thrive on. And he can chip in with some goals from out wide – he’s got eight and counting over the last two seasons.
Now, he’s not perfect and that goal tally needs improvement. But given his age and experience, Chukwueze is the kind of player Jurgen Klopp can develop into something special.
But, unfortunately, the Reds should pass on that opportunity. Circumstances have changed.
The Africa Cup of Nations has moved back to being a January tournament for 2021. Klopp labelled that decision a ‘catastrophe’ for Liverpool last month.
And it is. Both Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane will be absent over a crucial part of next season and Liverpool need cover.
But Chukwueze is Nigerian – he’ll almost certainly be missing then, too. Thus signing the talented 20-year-old doesn’t solve arguably the biggest problem facing the Reds next season.
And if they were considering spending £54m on him, they’d now be better off spending it on someone who can fill in.
It’s a real shame but a move for Chukwueze just doesn’t make much sense anymore.
