This summer saw Manchester United act in sheer desperation.

The Red Devils have been on a steady decline since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, that decline has accelerated since the appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United were in a lurch in pre-season, they needed a commanding centre half, somebody to come in and martial the defence – someone to take control.

The Old Trafford board had seen how Virgil van Dijk had transformed Liverpool’s fortunes – if only they could sign a Virgil of their own.

Ed Woodward emptied his pockets and spent £80m on Harry Maguire. Ha ha ha.

Since his arrival the England defender has been unconvincing to say the least – Mancs have clung on to some of his brighter moments, over applauding every slide tackle won without a red card.

Last night United were beaten 2-0 at home by Burnley. ‘Arry was clearly at fault for the first as he was caught the wrong side of Chris Wood.

They could have conceded the opener earlier as Maguire was once again caught out from a set piece, Burnley failed to capitalise.

All in all it was a shocking performance from the record transfer fee defender.

Joe Gomez cost Liverpool just £3.5m, in his last 22 Premier League starts The Reds have conceded just six goals.

Joe Gomez is streaks ahead of Harry Maguire.

The 22-year-old is better with the ball at his feet, he is quicker, he is more composed and he is less liable for errors.

The one argument that could have been made in Maguire’s defence was his aerial ability – he was found wanting far too often in the air against Burnley.

With the Euros coming up in the summer, Gareth Southgate has to be looking at the pair and thinking that JoGo is the stronger option.

Maguire’s ability was overestimated by his overinflated transfer fee. It’s time to accept it: Joe Gomez is better than Harry Maguire.
