Alisson Becker could go down as the best goalkeeper Liverpool have ever had. The Brazilian has proved to be a game changing addition to Jürgen Klopp’s squad, he was essentially the last piece of the jigsaw puzzle. If we had brought him in just six months earlier, perhaps Kiev could have been different. Before Ali, our last great keeper was a Spaniard. That Spaniard is set to return to the Premier League this month – Pepe Reina has sealed a loan move to Aston Villa.
Rafa Benitez signed Reina from Villareal in the summer of 2005, the Spaniard coming in to take the number one spot from Istanbul hero Jerzy Dudek.
The Spanish shot stopper quickly established himself as a great of the Anfield net. Reina won the Premier League Golden Glove on three consecutive occasions after his arrival on Merseyside – even beating out the legendary Petr Cech. Reina won the FA Cup, League Cup and Super Cup whilst at Anfield. He left the club for Bayern Munich in 2014.
According to the BBC – Pepe Reina is set to complete a loan move to Aston Villa in the next few days, with a medical the only remaining formality. The Villains are desperate for cover with first choice keeper Tom Heaton out for the rest of the season.
What RTK has to say
The Reds are still to play Villa at home, meaning there will likely be a fantastic reception for Reina when he returns to Merseyside.
The Spaniard is very fondly remembered by the Anfield faithful and he will be given a standing ovation when he sees us again in April.
